September 8, 2010 Provial results from the coaches point of view
Peewee Girls
This was the first year for an all girls lacrosse program in the GLA and
overall, the coaching staff felt that the season should be considered a
success. Throughout the OLA there is very few teams but that number is
growing and the GLA will continue to make every effort to stay involved
to the maximum extent possible.
This year at the Peewee level, there were five associations represented:
Gloucester, Nepean, Centre Wellington, Whitby and Clarington. The girls
did a fantastic job and very clearly demonstrated that their lacrosse
skills had improved dramatically. The win/loss results were tough but
the girls and Head Coach Trevor Quinn should be extremely proud of their
trail blazing efforts.
There are many great initiatives on the table to improve the Girls''
programme so pass the word and let's keep up the momentum we have
started!
Intermediate
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the players, the parents
and my coaching/managing staff for giving me a memorable season. It was
a pleasure to coach these young lads this year " What a Season" we had a
good run and I hope that this carries on to next year and that we keep
building on this success. I also want to recognize the veterans that are
leaving the team and thank them for their leadership and commitment to
the GLA.
There was one goal that I wanted to accomplish this year. It was to
teach team spirit, accountability, leadership and self esteem. You have
come together as bunch of young lads and where a force driven to
success. I hope that you will carry this one in your own goals in life
and continue to improve. I believe to have given you those tools that no
matter what we never quit, you got a taste at what it was to win and be
successful through team work and I am proud of that accomplishment.
Our season was the following we played 27 games in total we had 15 wins,
8 loses and 4 ties. We took home 3 Silver medals from the Peterborough,
Cornwall and Nepean. We finished in the semi finals in the Gloucester
and Sudbury Tournament. We made it to the semi finals in Provincial "C"
Division and we were one win away from being in the finals. We
accomplish all this without modifying out roster this is something to be
proud of, we were the only team to make it out of the quarter finals at
Provincials beside the Midget 2 who were able to catch a bye and move
directly to the "E" Division final and take home the Silver medal. When
I look back at our last game of the season and when I saw the amount of
people that attended the game Parents from our own team, Parents from
our own Association and even younger players from the GLA cheering us on
it was an amazing feeling. I don't know how the past season were for the
GLA Intermediate but I know that this one was my first and it was an
amazing one for me. I hope to see you guys next year.
Midget II
My thoughts re: the Midget 2 team 2010 season:
Even though our win-loss record looked bad we were competitive in
virtually every game. Almost every team we played was ranked higher and
we lost a lot of 1 or 2 goal games. A recurring comment from the
parents/fans was that our guys played hard to the final buzzer. That
hard work paid off in the Provincials. We took the first 2 games then
made an awesome come back from a 4-1 deficit to beat a very competitive
North Perth squad to put us in the final vs Huntsville. It was an
excellent game of lacrosse unfortunately we fell 6-4. After the game
you'd think we'd won. No long faces just a lot of smiling and a real
positive vibe (see attached photo). I'm hoping the players and parents
will remember this past season as having been successful and fun. I
will.
Our 2nd game was vs a really weak, short benched, poorly equipped team.
We could've have really pounded them. We told the guys to play hard but
be sportsmanlike about it. Our guys went out and did exactly that. We
didn't run the score, kept the goal celebration real low key, didn't
crush them when we could've. At the end their coaches thanked us for
giving them a good, clean, classy game. Laurent made a point of going
into the dressing room after and thanking our players for representing
the GLA in a really positive light. It meant a lot to the guys for the
league president to appreciate their effort
Bantam II
The Bantam II team was suitably ranked a D team and approached the
provincials with an upward swing in their recent record. In the first
game the Griffins defeated the Peterborough team 4-3 and then clinched a
berth in the quarter finals by beating Arthur 8-7 later in the day. On
Day Two, Gloucester met Sarnia in a meaningless game as the two teams
were guaranteed to move on and Sarnia won 5-1. Later in the day, the
Griffins met Cambridge in the Quarter Finals and it was a back and forth
game right from the start and we knew it was going to be a tough one.
Cambridge scored a late goal in the 3rd period and at the end of
regulation time, the game was tied 4-4. After one exciting period of
Overtime, the score stayed the same and the boys were showing tons of
heart but the opposition had the same desire. Late in the second period
of OT, Cambridge scored a goal from in close and the season came to an
end. Overall, the season was tough and there were many tough games but
as the season proceeded, the team continued to build and had a very
strong showing at the Provincials. The Coaching Staff were all very
proud of the efforts of all of the boys and felt that a different bounce
could have changed things dramatically. Great job to everyone who
helped the team achieve the success we had.
Peewee I
Peewee 1 competed very well although our record was 1 and 2 the results
did not reflect the players efforts and heart they showed throughout the
tournament. All the members of peewee 1 grew and developed and who ever
will inherits these boys as a coach next year can look forward to a fast
start to the season!
